A broken lift cable is never just the cable. On a torsion system, the cable works with the spring and drum to lift the door evenly on both sides. When one cable frays or jumps its drum, the door racks sideways in the track, and if the other side is still under spring tension, you get a door hanging crooked with several hundred pounds of springloaded force behind it. Louisville's housing stock runs mostly 1958 to 2003, with a lot of that concentrated in the 1980s and 90s build years across the metro's named neighborhoods and suburbs. Doors from that era were often installed with galvanized cable that was never rated for a 40-year service life, and by now a lot of it is at or past the point where fraying starts at the drum groove where the cable rubs hardest. The complication isn't the cable itself, it's what's holding it: torsion springs on side-mount hardware, low-headroom drums, or extension springs on older single-panel doors, all of which change how a cable repair has to be done. A repair on one setup can be a straightforward reline; on another it means pulling both springs down first.
Most calls start the same way: the door won't go up, or it goes up crooked and stops. Sometimes you'll hear a bang from the garage and find one side of the door sitting lower than the other, with a loose loop of cable hanging off the drum. Other times the opener still runs but the door barely moves, straining against a cable that's slipped its track on the drum but hasn't fully broken yet. That's actually the more dangerous version, because the door can drop without warning once the cable finally lets go. On older extension-spring setups, a snapped cable can let a panel come down hard enough to bend the bottom section. If your door is stuck halfway, hanging at an angle, or making a grinding sound near the top corners, that's cable and drum, not opener.
Cable tension work is one of the jobs we tell people not to do themselves, and we say that without trying to sell you anything. A torsion spring under load holds enough force to break bones or worse if it lets go while you're working near it, and there's no way to safely wind down a cable-and-drum system without winding bars, vise grips, and knowing which way the spring is wound. Extension spring setups carry less stored energy but still enough to snap a cable back like a whip. If your door is a lighter single-car unit and the cable simply popped off the drum without breaking, some owners can reseat it with the door manually supported and the opener disconnected, but that's the extent of what's reasonable without the right tools. Anything involving a broken cable strand, a bent drum, or a door that's racked in the track is a call, not a project.
The climate here is the other half of the story. Louisville sits in a cold-moderate band, which means real freeze-thaw cycling through the winter months, not constant deep freeze but repeated swings across freezing. That cycling is hard on galvanized cable and on the drums it wraps around, because moisture gets into the strands during a thaw and then contracts and expands as it refreezes, working the wire fibers loose over years. Combine that with a metro area where a large share of the roughly 33,995 owner-occupied houses were built in that 1958-2003 window, and you get a lot of original hardware reaching the same failure point around the same age, regardless of which side of town the house is on. It's a service-area pattern, not a one-house problem, and it shows up from the older streets close to downtown out to the newer subdivisions on the edges of the metro.
Cable wire fatigues slowly from repeated flexing over the drum, and Louisville's freeze-thaw winters accelerate that by letting moisture into the strands. By the time it snaps, the wire has usually been fraying for months where you couldn't see it, at the drum groove or the bottom bracket.
Don't operate the door at all with a broken or slipped cable. The opposite side may still be under spring tension, and forcing the door with the opener can rack it further in the track or drop it. Leave it closed or open only as far as it safely goes and call for a repair.
On most jobs we replace both cables together, since they're the same age and under the same wear from the same spring system. Replacing only the broken side means the other one is likely to go within a season or two, which means a second service call for the same job.
